What's the celebration about?
In 2010, precisely one hundred years has passed since the Norwegian Institute of Technology (in Norwegian, Norges Teknisk Høiskole, or NTH) was established in Trondheim - after a long national debate about where the school should be located. Twelve years later, Norway's teacher training college was established in Trondheim, too.
Over the last one hundred years, Trondheim's institutions of higher education have grown and changed, all the while training thousands of men and women who have gone on to build modern Norway. In fact, Trondheim's research community has provided the foundation for the growth and innovation that are a vital aspect of Norway's industries.
Today, these venerable institutions of learning have found their place in the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Engineers have been joined by classical scholars, social scientists, physicians, artists and many others, all working together in a multicultural community. This fusion of arts, sciences and technology makes NTNU unique among Norwegian institutions of higher education.
NTNU is also a part of Trondheim, which is celebrating 250 years as a City of Knowledge. NTNU is following a good European tradition of using the oldest institutions as the basis for an anniversary celebration. Therefore, we are participating in the commemoration of the foundation of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters 250 years ago this year. Although we celebrate this connection, we have mainly chosen to focus on our own 100-year anniversary, so we can celebrate all the strong professional communities that are a part of NTNU.
