About the

Faculty of Medicine

The most important tasks of the Faculty of Medicine are education, research and information dissemination. In 2007, the Faculty had a staff of around 800, about 700 medical students and some 1800 students on other programmes of study and courses. The Faculty’s research and teaching activities cover most disciplines in the field of medicine.

Studies

The Faculty of Medicine admits 120 new medical students a year, and is the most popular medical school in Norway. In 2007, the Faculty was running several master’s programmes with 271 students and five PhD programmes with 255 students. The training offered by the Faculty also covers further and continued education, in addition to a wide range of individual subjects. All in all, the Faculty has around 2500 full and part-time students.

Research

The research conducted at the Faculty of Medicine spans across multiple disciplines. It ranges from basic research to translational research at the intersection between basic and clinical science.

Three of the main focus areas of research are:

Health Surveys and Biobanking
Population-based health surveys and biobanks represent powerful tools in the exploration of health and human disease. The faculty of Medicine is in charge of HUNT – the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study– one of the largest population-based health studies ever performed (a total of 100,000 individuals included).

Medical Imaging for Improved Patient Care
Research within medical imaging should strive towards achieving different objectives: improved patient outcome, cost-efficient health care, and commercialisation of useful innovations. NTNU and St. Olavs Hospital represents a unique multidisciplinary research environment in MRI and ultrasound.

Translating research for human health
The new fully integrated university hospital is being completed in 2010. Outpatient clinics, imaging and surgery, university research laboratories and offices as well as clinical wards located in the same building, provides an excellent basis for translational research.
