Training component for PhD programmes
PhD coursework
The coursework portion of the PhD requires completion of a course load equal to 30 study points (equivalent to one semester), consisting of a variety of PhD-level courses. Coursework is typically programme specific, and courses can be taken at NTNU and at other universities. A student must pass all of his or her courses before he or she can submit his or her dissertation.
Registering for topics in the NTNU PhD catalogue
The candidate must register for assessment of PhD topics found in the PhD catalogue. This must be done via StudentWeb within the deadlines stipulated by the University Director. Studentweb can be found at http://studweb.ntnu.no/ . Students can use this address to register for examinations, cancel their registration for examinations, view examination results and report changes of address. The current deadline for registering for topics on StudWeb is 15 September and 15 February.
Individual syllabi and external courses
In cases where no appropriate topics are offered to the candidate, she or he may apply to establish an individual syllabus.
External PhD and Master’s degree courses may also be included in the training component after special approval. The candidate must ensure that documentation of participation and academic content is attached to the application. This application with specified documentation of courses must be sent with the application for admission.
Changes in the training plan/adaptation
The candidate is responsible for completing the training component in accordance with the approved training plan. The candidate is also responsible for applying for approval of any changes to the training plan. Any changes to the training plan must be approved by the faculty on recommendation from the PhD programme board
