Long biography

Viruses are by far the most abundant biological entities on our planet. They are ten times more abundant than bacteria. The abundance and diversity of viruses has been confirmed by the abundance and diversity of their genes in many recent metagenomic studies. The fact that viruses are more abundant than their targets is not surprising, since every single cellular species is infected by many diverse viral species and their roles in controlling the diversity of populations is a research field in which I am strongly interested.

My research has been and will proceed to focus on the molecular interplay between viruses and their animal host, epidemiology and evolution of infectious disease, vaccine research but equally important for me is the field of bioinformatics, system-biology and pharmacology.  Below are some focus areas listed:

1.         Molecular evolution and ecology

  • Genetic variability, novel agents and viral population dynamics (quasi-species)

  • Environmental change, host habitat change and viral molecular evolution
  • Competition among viruses

2.         Molecular interactions between viruses and cells

  • MicroRNA and viral infection
  • Signal transduction and pathogenicity factors
  • Induced change of the microbiotica as antibiotics alternative

3.         Vaccine research

  • Bioinformatic tools in vaccine development
  • Improve current vaccines, e.g. by the integration of RNAi target sites for tissue specific vaccines
  • Develop new vaccine approaches, e.g. the use of virus-like-particles
