The Department prepares top qualified Biomedical laboratory scientists (BLS) to participate in medical laboratories. The education combines courses in medical laboratory technology, natural sciences and social sciences. We emphasize on theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Biomedical laboratory scientists are responsible for laboratory examinations carried out in medical laboratories. Laboratory surveys are often crucial for correct diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Although the main activity at the department is education, the department has also significant research activity. The research is mainly related to personalized diagnosis and treatment of cancer with our research on the regulation of certain cellular processes, especially the hunger response (autophagia) of cancer cells.

The Department of Biomedical Laboratory Science is one of eight departments at the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
