Department of Engineering Design and Materials
The Department of Engineering Design and Materials is responsible for the degree programme Product Development and Materials Technology (PuMa). This programme has a technological-scientific bias whilst creativity and innovation is cultivated. The programme combines subjects of product development and design with materials technology and production processes.
Our focus is the education of engineers and the development and transfer of knowledge to, among others, the manufacturing and oil industries. We provide knowledge that helps create value, facilitate innovation, as well as contribute to solving tasks of great importance to society.
Main fields
Our main areas of expertise are:
- Design, analysis and manufacturing (DAM)
- Materials
The interaction between materials technology and product development/design is a core concern of the department. Processing aluminum and the use of polymers and composites is given extra attention.
Research centres
SIMLab - Materials technology has been selected as one of five Strategic Areas at NTNU, and aluminum is a main focus of the Structural Impact Laboratory (SIMLAB), a Centre for Research-based Innovation.
Gemini Center: The department collaborates with SINTEF on the activities of the Gemini Centre "Robust Material Selection and Design – Offshore Applications", sharing the Tribology Lab facilities.
