The simulator is located in St. Olavs Hospital, and is used in the instruction and training of medical students, physicians, nurses and other health pprofessionals. The centre is built on a model of the simulation centre at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.
Simulation is used to learn complicated manoeuvres and skills. Real life mistakes in these situations may cause losses and damages of financial character or result in personal injuries. We simulate real life situations so that the attendees may perform better when the situation arises. Many industries have understood that such training can reduce economic losses and provide better safety. Simulation is particularly used in industries with complex technical installations, like aviation, shipping, transport and oil production, where technical safety is important and human mistakes can have enormous consequences.
Simulation of acute situations is especially useful in medical fields where complex, major injuries are treated, where good co-operation is essential for a successful outcome for the patient and where the sickest patients are treated. Yet this form of instruction and training has been little used in medicine, other than when training resuscitation techniques for treating people with cardiac arrest. Until now it has been difficult to get support for the idea of carrying out regular simulation as is done in aviation and shipping. One might wonder why the medical field has not realized to a sufficient degree the need for preparation through training before treating sick patients.
As we see it, doctors, nurses, ambulance personnel and other health personnel need frequent training of skills and co-operation patterns.
