Bachelor (BA) level:
The department offer the following subjects as part of the study programme Language and Literature:

Linguistics 
Phonetics
Applied linguistics (taught only in Norwegian)
Swahili
Norwegian as a second Language (taught only in Norwegian)

 Master (MA) level:
The department offers master studies (MA) in Phonetics, Linguistics and communication studies (Applied linguistics).

A master in linguistics is also offered as an international programme, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Linguistics, for which many students receive funding from the Quota Scheme.

Both MA and MPhil are two year programs. In the regular MA programmes the first year is spent taking courses while the entire second year is dedicated to writing the master thesis. For the international M.Pliil-degree two and a half semester (75 credits) consist of course work, while the last semester and a half (45 credits) is allotted to the writing of a thesis. During the summer period between the first and second year in the M.Phil progratnine the students are given the opportunity to do field work in their home countries related to their thesis.
