The department hosts two research centres:

Centre for Technology and Society (CTS) was established in 1988 to undertake interdisciplinary studies of social and cultural dimensions of science and technology. The centre has initiated research that covers a wide range of techno-scientific phenomena, to explore policy, innovation, production of knowledge, and everyday life activities historically as well as from a contemporary perspective.

Centre for Gender Studies (SKF) was established in 1989 to engage in interdisciplinary research into gender and cultural change, including sexuality and ethnicity. Gender differences may appear natural and obvious but are at the same time lived quite differently in various societies and at different times, and in our own society these gender relations are currently undergoing rapid changes. The centre has initiated research to analyse these changes in a critical fashion, to look into the conditions that determine how gender is embedded in, shaped by and enrolled into power.
