The Regional Biobank of Central Norway, henceforth called the Biobank, is a research facility which contains a collection of human biological material such as blood, tissue and urine samples, and a database which stores relevant information about the samples and the patients from whom the samples originate, as well as information obtained from analysis of the materia

The material is collected as part of medical examinations, diagnosis or treatment. The Biobank is foreseen to give an increased knowledge about causes for diseases and their mechanisms, and thereby contributing to improve prophylactic health work, diagnostics and treatment. The Biobank is owned and operated by official authorities on a no commercial profit basis.

The Biobank was established in collaboration between the Central Norwegian Regional Health Authority (data management and administration) and the Faculty of Medicine at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (economics and personnel).

The Biobank is approved by The Data Inspectorate of Norway, and by the Regional Committee for Medical Research Ethics, and all information in the Biobank is handled according to the guidelines of the Data Inspectorate.
