Competition for best project proposal

Interdisciplinary research project in medical technology

NTNU's strategic area of research in medical technology wants to establish an interdisciplinary research project that involves several of the networks and disciplines in medical technology. The objective of such a project is to realize the potential offered by the various research groups in medical technology and to improve collaboration between them.

The idea is that:
-Brainstorming between several multidisciplinary research communities can generate exciting new ideas
-Increased contact and collaboration between the networks and disciplines can improve resource utilization and research quality

A two-phase competition for the best project proposal is hereby announced.
The criteria for the project are: originality, exciting new interdisciplinarity, feasibility, value to society, and innovation potential. Potential for further development of the project proposal as a Centre for Research-based Innovation (SFI) or Centre of Excellence (SFF) application is also an advantage. The project must include several of the disciplines in medical technology and be relevant to the strategy for the strategic area of medical technology.

The disciplines in the strategic research area of medical technology include: medical imaging, medical biotechnology, bionanotechnology, bioinformatics, biomedical optics, biomechanics, health informatics, human motor control and movement, societal aspects of new technology. A number of national centres of expertise at NTNU, SINTEF, and St. Olav's Hospital are also included. In addition, the national and international collaborative partners of the research groups will naturally be able to participate. For more information about the disciplines, national centres of expertise and strategy for medical technology, see: http://www.ntnu.no/medtech.

It is initially desirable to receive project proposals of about 3 pages that describe the background/purpose, the various disciplines/networks and their collaborative partners as well as their contribution to the project, and the potential for further Centre for Research-based Innovation (SFI) or Centre of Excellence (SFF) applications. It is a prerequisite that the project proposal has been discussed with and approved by the collaborative partners.

The project proposals will be evaluated by a committee that will determine which proposal(s) should be develop further into a complete project description. Selected project(s) will be granted funds for the preparation of a project description. The committee will then conduct a new assessment and choose the final research project.

The final project will be allocated resources in the form of:
-A coordinator in a 50% position
-Three recruitment positions: Two 4-year PhDs and a 2-year postdoctoral position (conditional on allocation from NTNU centrally)
-Annual working capital of approximately NOK 100,000 for 3 years.

This is a unique opportunity for postdoctoral fellows and researchers with good research ideas to extend their research activity and collaborate with other research groups and disciplines at NTNU.

The project proposal must be put forward through one of the networks and must be sent to Karin Tømmerås: karin.tommeras@ntnu.no

Deadline for putting forward an initial project proposal: 1 December 2009
