NTNU NanoLab was established by the board of NTNU in 2004. NTNU NanoLab is cross-facultary with active participation from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology (NT), Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering (IME), and Faculty of Medicine (DMF).

Mandate
The Rector of NTNU assigned the following mandate to NTNU NanoLab in 2010:
- Approve strategies and action plans for NTNU NanoLab in cooperation with the committed faculties at NTNU, and contribute to the their realization.
- Initiate research within nanotechnology in cooperation with the committed faculties at NTNU.
- Approve budget and annual accounts for the finacial means in NTNU NanoLab's disposition.
- Coordinate and recommend prioritization related to applications and distrubution of financial means for nanotechnological equipment and research at NTNU.
- Initiate, coordinate and approve contracts with external partners regarding use of NTNU NanoLab's infrastructure.
- Submit annual reports on the activities and economy.
- In collaboration with the management of NTNU and SINTEF work to promote nanotechnology for the granting public authorities.
- Appoint an advisory Leader Group for NTNU NanoLab.
