Education (pedagogy) is an important science in today's society because it deals with basic and fundamental sides of being human – how we learn, how we communicate, and last but not least it deals with the interaction between the individual and the society. In addition to this, education is both a theoretical and practical subject and it deals with a wide range of aspects on schooling and education, philosophy, childhood, friendship, media and development.

Each and every one of us will have an opinion on education, on topics such as what constitutes good learning and how good learning situations can be adjusted. Even though we are entitled to having different ideas and perceptions on education, this is however not the same as having knowledge and competence within this field (pedagogy). Regarding educational questions there are no absolute, definitive answers. Different times, different historical and social contexts have given different answers. What makes education such an exciting and challenging subject is how the different problems in education can be approached and explained.

The study of education will provide you with a wide and versatile competence which you will benefit from when working with other individuals, on different levels and in different situations, and on both a practical level and on a superior theoretical level. You will gain insight into and understanding of how individuals and organizations learn and evolve in today's complex, ever-changing society. More specifically you will obtain knowledge and competence within the field of education that will be helpful when analyzing educational processes, communication, learning, upbringing and liberal education in the area of tension between the concrete and the abstract. The educationalist has to be able to view each particular learning situation, and at the same time keep the superior perspective in mind. As each learning situation is different; what to do in a specific learning situation can not necessarily be transferred on to another learning situation. All of the studies in education will provide training and competence in critical reflection and analysis, both orally and in writing.

Studies
The Department of Education offers studies on several levels. The one-year program is an integrated part of the bachelor study, and it provides an introduction into the basic disciplines and central educational concepts. Using the one-year program as a foundation, the bachelor program will further provide a continuation and expansion into the field of education. In addition, the students will here be given an introduction into scientific research methods and they will write their bachelor thesis during the last semester. The Department of Education offers several specializations of studies at the master-level; Education and Upbringing, Special education, and Early childhood education. There is also a course in media education which is on the master-level.  The Department of Education also collaborates with the Program for Teacher Education on the master program Teacher Profession and Teaching Practice. The Department of Education also offers several master programs for students who are working and do not have the possibility to be full-time students.
