Pattern formation in complex materials

Labyrinths, stick-slip bubbles and "corals" are but a few of the self-organized structures that emerge in complex fluid flows. Our research aims to uncover the physical mechanisms at play, and generate knowledge of consequence for new industrial processes such as CO2 sequestration.

Specific topics

  • DisplacementBubblefinger of confined granular mixtures
  • Intermittency and jamming in frictional flows
  • Hydraulic fracturing
  • Emerging structures in free surface flows
  • Pattern formation in soft, viscoelastic materials
  • Biomaterials: evolution of collagen structures in scar healing
  • Photonics and biomedical imaging: fluorescent nanolabels, REM systems

We have discovered a remarkable variety in self-organized structures emerging in displacement flows in granular mixtures
