NorSEd
- Nordic research network in Science Education
NTNU is the coordinator of NorSEd, a Nordic research network in science education.
The network has been established with financial support from NordForsk in three years, 2010-2013. It aims at strengthening research co-operation across the Nordic countries and contributing to high quality research training for PhD students in science education.
NorSEd will develop research workshops and joint courses at the doctoral level across the Nordic countries, and offer travel grants for participants in these network activities. The financial support also provides opportunities to cover some of the expenses for a research stay in another Nordic country for both PhD students and more established researchers.

- NorSEd course: application for participation - Deadline: 31. January, 2012
Please note
In the registration, please provide a short description of your research, and how it will benefit from participating in the course. The registration includes applying for travel grants (no extra form required for this). It is important that you give a realistic estimate of travel costs, in order for NorSEd to calculate the total costs of the course, and to decide whether we can offer travel grants to all participants.

Course design
In this course doctoral students engage in sustainability issues and new views on learning. Lectures and visits to projects on the University of Iceland campus give students insight into sustainability research and efforts in Iceland. Invited expert Wolff-Michael Roth leads a seminar on activism in teaching and learning. Students collaborate on assignments that build their academic skills, including proposal writing and poster design. The course culminates in a mini-conference in which students present their posters and give short talks.
The course relates to the goals of the UNESCO Decade of Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2014. It presents perspectives and achievements on how science forms part of sustainability education. It is organised in cooperation with the doctoral programme in the School of Education of the University of Iceland.
Participants earn 6 credits for a pre-course assignment, a short proposal and preparation of a poster during the course. Additional 2 credits are available for completing a post-course written assignment, due end of June 2012.
Invited experts
Specialists in sustainability and science education from the University of Iceland and Nordic partners.
Wolff-Michael Roth, Research Professor, Griffith University, Mt Gravatt, QLD, Australia
Support from NorSEd
The NorSEd network covers hotel accommodation with breakfast from Sunday 22 April to Saturday 28 April and lunches for five days (Monday to Friday) for up to 20 participants. NorSEd also has travel grants for participants, and we hope to be able to cover travel for all participants travelling from Nordic countries. For this reason we ask you to state your approximate travel costs in the registration form. PhD students will be given priority.

Design-Based Research (DBR)

Design-Based Research (DBR)
- Autumn 2011
NorSEd course for PhD students and researchers in science education
Department of Teacher Education, University of Helsinki, Finland
Organizers
Jari Lavonen, University of Helsinki & Berit Bungum, Norwegian University of Science and Technology
Topic of the course
Design-based research approach (DBR) has been suggested as a solution for the discontinuation between educational research and praxis. It is a general framework for design, development, implementation and evaluation of learning activities and it uses a pragmatic frame. DBR emphasises three aspects: (a) a design process is essentially iterative starting from the recognition of the need to change praxis, (b) it generates a widely usable artefact, like learning activities or a learning environment, (c) and it provides educational knowledge for more intelligible praxis. DBR is comprised of the combination of theory development, the prescriptions of successful design processes, and the prescriptions of successful design solutions.
The course gives 7.5 credits provided an assignment paper on DBR is presented and accepted. It also requires participating in the review of one other paper in the group of participants.

With shock and deep sadness we received the message that Phil Scott passed away Friday July 15th.
Phil was such a great science educator and has been a great support and inspiration for us in the Nordic countries and elsewhere in the world. He was also in the steering group for NorSEd. We miss him deeply, and our thoughts go to Phil's family, friends and closest colleagues in Leeds.
