SIMLab strives to maintain a healthy balance between engineers and researchers. A long history with project-based research has helped the centre's team to recognize the necessity of letting people do what they are good at—be that research, teaching, or administrative tasks.

The competencies of the group serve as a basis for research activities on the structural behaviour of components and structures, taking into account the interaction between material behaviour, structural geometry, and manufacturing process.
