Course content

The historical and social basis for building.
Historic technology and use of materials in building.
Elements of form and how they are connected in form systems.
Historic theories of architecture.

Learning outcome

The course unit is generally intended to further an understanding of the history of the built environmennt, in the light of technical knowledge, theory and social conditions. The students are supposed to obtain knowledge of architecture and themes of architectural theory from antiquity until the beginning of the 20th C. The spring term concentrates on Norwegian and Nordic architecture until c. 1960, and a.o. Nordic traditions of building in wood.
