About the course

Course content

The student will develop the ability to analyse complex problems in a foreign culture, develop the understanding of how destinctive cultural traits and expressions can be developed into a new type of architecture and study traditional crafts and the spiritual background of the spesific architectural language of the culture.

Learning outcome

The subject shall increase the understanding of how a language of architecture develops during interaction with local premises and how an architect can approach these. The problem is intensified through working in an extremely foreign cultural situation. The gained experience will be important in handling any architectural problem outside ones local environment.


Learning methods and activities

The student creates his own project. Fieldbased investigations and analyses. Excursions in Tibet and Mainland China. Seminars, and workshops on location. Short term evaulations and individual tutoring.

Compulsory assignments

  • Two months of field studies in Tibet

Required previous knowledge

Completed three years basic courses in architecture, bachelor in architecture or equivalent. The course is associated with the courses AAR4809 "Architectural observation, -reflection and -analysis" and AAR4855 "Surveying traditional Tibetan architecture".
