About

About the course

Course content

- The premises for the project are established through local cooperation, participatory studies and use of goal- and problem-based project planning.
- The project work and the solutions are based on the identification of local resources. The objective is to integrate resource-related and environmental, human and cultural aspects.
- Mapping of common land and relations with property owners at the neighbourhood level
- Participatory analysis carried out and mapping of institutional status.
- Cooperation established between CBOs and local NGOs for follow-up measures.

Learning outcome

The course is to give understanding for the requirements for local planning in a developing country with an urban-ecological perspective. The emphasis is on learning through the group's cooperation with the local society, local studies and the planning of measures. The project work will build up a comprehensive understanding of the local situation with focus on effective planning tools in all the project areas.
Students will obtain insight into change and transformation processes in historical cities in developing countries.

Learning methods and activities

The project work is field-based with two months in a developing country. Close group work is a condition since the participants cooperate with formal and informal institutions as well as local partners. The foundation for the project work is laid during the introductory seminars in Norway. Lectures, seminars and team-work with local resource-people and teachers. Through its composition of participants (Norwegian, Nordic and European students, NORAD-scholars, quota-students) the course provides both cross-cultural and interdisciplinary learning. Lessons will be given in English if some international students follow the course.
