Course content
General experience of architectural design. - Special focus on the local resources - material, cultural and human resources. - Basis: The cultural aspect as a factor in design and transformation of built environment, building history and assessments of the value of the existing built environment Design: Improvement of the existing built environment, possibly re-construction/addition of new buildings/building elements. Technical issues and architectonic considerations, function analysis with regard to new use, regulatory requirements are all aspects of the design.
Learning outcome
The course gives the students an introduction to planning and design in existing built environments, in which the emphasis is particularly on conserving and developing cultural, architectonic and environmental qualities. A typical problem will be how to transform an existing building for new use. This may also entail designing new buildings/new elements in existing situation.
Learning methods and activities
The course is rooted in a design task for an existing building or built environment, with thorough field studies. In the start of the semester there is an introduction period, literature studies and seminars, as preparations for the field studies. During the field work, the students will collect data, and analyze the existing built environment as a basis for a project to improve, re-construct or develop the case. Lessons will be given in English if some international students follow the course.
Required previous knowledge
Completed three years basic courses in architecture, bachelor in architecture or equivalent. The course must be taken in combination with AAR4825 Building Documentation and Analysis during the same semester, as this course includes the field work providing the necessary background material for the project work.
