Course content
- Similarities and differences in the methodic approach and interpretation of physical environment within architecture and anthropology.
- The notion of "Culture" in general, and specifically related to form and use of physical environment.
- Field work techniques
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
An introduction to selected anthropological ideas of relevance for architecture and planning.
The student will also get acquainted with different qualitative methods, practical fieldwork and interview techniques.
By conducting fieldwork the student will get an understanding of connections between physical form and social life.
Skills:
Prepare the student for independent research.
Use local knowledge, achieved through anthropological fieldwork, as a tool for projects.
Have a conscious relation to cultural differences.
Through writing an essay, have a reflected relation to use of concepts and how to structure a text.
General competence:
An understanding of architecture as a cultural phenomenon.
The student gets experience with inter-disciplinary work and analyzing research questions from different disciplinary perspectives.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, seminars, field work with case studies, literature studies, essay writing.
