About the course

Course content

Critical examination of Integrated Action Planning, and its menue for local planning, its practice in different contexts and its potential and limitations for contribution to strategic planning.
Introduction to, and examination of, Project planning method (LFA/Goal Oriented Project Planning) with analyses of participants/stakeholders and their interests, problems and objectives, as well as project matrix according to UN and NORAD standards.
Methods for participatory research and participatory observation.
Case study method in development studies.
Methods for cooperation and the understanding of local societies.
Local mapping and the drawing of boundaries.
Evaluation in development cooperation.
Introduction to fieldwork in a developmental context.

Learning outcome

The course will provide methodological knowledge that can be used in field-based project work on an urban ecological basis. The course will also lay a methodological foundation for cooperation in a local society and development practice.

Learning methods and activities

Introductory seminars will be held both in Norway and in a developing country. Active participation in group work is assumed. Joint student reviews and discussions of compedium with mandatory articles.

Required previous knowledge

Completed three years basic courses in architecture, bachelor in architecture or equivalent. The course must be taken together with course AAR4825 Urban Ecological Planning in Developing Countries. Project Work, and course AAR4820 Urban Ecological Planning. Theory. Students with the AAR4944 Planning for Sustainability and Development, have priority.
