Course content
- Modes of Planning conducive for achieving sustained development with a particular emphasis on urban challenges. - Architecture, Construction, and Building Materials as constituting elements of sustainability. - Use and Management of Natural Resources; Water, Energy, Land - Housing and settlement planning - Agents and institutions and their impact interventions and on modes of development - New Institutionalism and Endogenous Social and Economic Development
Learning outcome
The course is to give insight into how "sustainability" and "development" is interdependent in a global perspective. The course will highlight planning and implementation of physical interventions, and its underlying social and material contexts, in a developing world perspective.
Learning methods and activities
The course is given in cooperation with several departments at the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Art, the Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology, and the Faculty of Social Science and Technology Management. Weight is placed on interdisciplinary seminars with introductory speakers from other faculties and specialists with experience in development-related issues.
A case study on current building projects being planned and/or implemented in Trondheim to explore how the concepts of Development and Sustainability is actually practices in the North and how this might relate to, and bear impact on, development in the Global South.
Recommended previous knowledge
None, but the course will subsequently give priority to attend course AAR4525 Urban Ecological Planning in Developing Countries; Project Work, to AAR4820 Urban Ecological Planning. Theory, and to AAR4816 Urban Ecological Planning, Method.
Required previous knowledge
Completed three years basic courses in architecture, bachelor in architecture or equivalent. Registration deadline: 1. december.
Course materials
A total of about 300 pages reading material related to the topics of the lectures.
