About the course

Course content

The course is based on the AFR1000 and AFR2850 courses. AFR1110 is one of the core courses in the bachelor's degree in African Studies, with a broad social scientific approach. The course will focus on
the African state and civil society, but will also discuss other current topics dealing with these core issues.

Learning outcome

The student will gain a good overview of modern African social theory, with a main focus on theories about the state in Afrika, social ineqality, relations between local community and the state, legitimacy, democratization and collapse of the state. The student should be able to present theoretical and empirical knowledge, both written and orally.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and group work. The main topics are presented in the lectures. Through group work the students will work more with these topics. The groups are also an arena for giving response to the compulsory exercise.
