About

About the course

Course content

Through ethnographic studies, the course seeks to assess some expressions of modernisation in contemporary Africa, with a focus on processes of urbanisation – the tension, but also the symbiotic relationship between urban and rural life, the modern and traditional, the collective and the individual – and the socio-economic livelihood of young men and women. The course further aims to explore the construction of gender and its problematic reconfigurations in today’s Africa, and how this is expressed in new forms of kinship and family life as well as in sexual and reproductive life.

Learning outcome

To develop a critical understanding of some processes of modernisation – including urbanisation – in contemporary Africa, with a focus on how young men and women adapt to rapid transformations and generate new ways of life.
