About the course
Course content
This course provides an introduction to recent literature, from the Romantic period early in the 1800s to the current postmodern age. The most significant authors and works covered in the course are Gustave Flauberts Madame Bovary, Fiodor Dostojevskis The Double, Henrik Ibsens Ghosts, Virginia Woolfs To the Lighthouse, Samuel Becketts Endgame, Tom Stoppards Travesties, and Marguerite Duras The Lover. In addition there will be a selection of texts including poetry and theory. Thus the course will provide an understanding of art and literature in our contemporary society. The course will also make relevant parallels to other art forms within a broader historical, philosophical, and social context.
Learning outcome
The course will provide students with an introduction to recent literature, from the Romantic period to the current postmodern age. The students will read and must be familiar with the most important works of this period and develop a cross-aesthetic understanding of art and literature in our own age as well as our near past.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and group studies including written assignments.
Course requirements:
Compulsory written assignment (4-5 pages) with feedback.
