About the course

Course content

The course will focus on development from the earliest Stone Age cultures in Europe to the beginning of our era. In the latest Stone Age the societies of hunter- and gatherers, early farming and fram animals will be emphasized, in addition to the development of patterns of society, establishment of hierarchs and lines of contact through the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. The course has a broad European perspective, but its main focus lies on the Nordic countries.

Learning outcome

The students will gain knowledge of the human prehistory with a broad European perspective and with a focal point to socities before litteracy. At the same time glimps of Non-European societies will be shown. Primary sources and how knowledge of humans in prehistoric times have been put forward will be emphasized.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and seminars. In order to take the exam a written assignment (ca. 2000 words) must be submitted and approved by a deadline announced at the beginning of the semester. "Guidelines for written assignment" is to be found on the department's web site.

Course materials

The required reading list will be available at the beginning of the semester. Students are not allowed to consult any text-books during the 6 hour exam.
