About the course
Course content
The starting point is the Iron Age structures in Europe and the connection between the European and Mediterranean cultures. The developement in Europe from tribal societies to national states when Europe developed into a religious and cultural unity, is closely viewed as the conditions in the Nordic countries are studied. The formation of towns and national states, the signification the church and social and economic networks on different levels are emphasized.
Learning outcome
The students are to gain knowledge of the contribution made by archaeology to the study of the Iron Age and Medieval times in Europe and the Nordic countries. The period runs from the first known written sources to writing becomes common, and the church and the state are established as important instituions. The source material and in which way knowlede about humans in prehistory has been brought forward will be emphasized.

The required reading list will be available at the beginning of the semester. Students are not allowed to consult any text-books during the 6 hour exam.
