Course content
Instruction is comprised of a theoretical and practical introduction to archaeological excavation techniques, such as excavations of settlements with and without cultural deposits, urban digs, excavations of burial mounds and cairns, iron works, etc, as well as elaborating on management laws. Lectures will be given on natural scientific methods of analysis and an introduction to preservation techniques. An advanced materials course will also be offered, covering the most common artefact categories used in prehistoric time. Central topics will be material type, raw material and typology.
Learning outcome
The students shall gain knowledge of the regulations, structure and values of Norwegian cultural heritage, in addition to field activities as excavation techniques, registration and management of archaeological sites. The course also provides an introduction to scientific dating-methods, conservation and knowledge of archaeological artifacts.
Learning methods and activities
Students accepted into a bachelor's programme in archaeology have priority in participation. The course design and execution will depend on the exact number of students in the course. Students must therefore register for this course prior to December 1. A field trip will be offered in the spring (most likely in May).
In order to be able to sit the exam, students must attend a minimum of 75 percent of the lectures on theory, and a minimum of 75 percent of the fieldwork. Be aware that exam questions can be given from the compulsory lectures and fieldwork. The exam consist of a written assignment of maximum 3500 words and a written exam of 6 hours. Both parts must be passed in the same term and there will be given one grade only. If one failes, both the assignment and the written exam must be completed again in the same term. Required previous knowledge
Students accepted into a bachelor's programme in archaeology have priority in participation. Passed exam in ARK1120, or equivalent, is required.
The course has restricted admission.
Course materials
The required reading list will be available at the beginning of the semester. Students are not allowed to consult any text-books during the 6 hour exam. Students must cover some of the expences related to their own field work and excursions.
