About the course

Course content

The course covers the development of a project description, and on the basis of this, the writing of a Master's thesis. The topic for the thesis is chosen in collaboration with the department. The thesis should be the equivalent of two semesters' workload. It should be maximum 70 pages long (approximately 25,000 words), A4 format, with 2.5cm margins, 1.5 line spacing and 12 point Times New Roman font. The table of contents, illustrations, acknowledgements, literature list and a possible appendix are counted in addition to this. If the length of the thesis exceeds the norm, it will have to be approved by the advisor.

Learning outcome

The students are to learn how to accomplish an archaeological analysis and write a scientific thesis.

Learning methods and activities

The students must seek contact with their academic supervisor. The students are required to attend 50% of the thesis seminars as a condition to present themselves for their final exam. The final exam consists of an assessment of the master thesis and and oral examination. An preliminary grade will be made before the oral examination. The oral exam focuses on the theme of the master thesis and problems/questions concerning the theme of the thesis. The oral exam starts with the candidate presenting his/hers master thesis, a presentation which lasts for 30 minutes. After the presentation the candidate and the censors will discuss various parts of the thesis. The final grade will be set after the oral exam.

Compulsory assignments

  • Paricipation in minimum 50% of master's thesis seminars.

Participation requires acceptance into the Master's programme in archaeology.
