About the course

Course content

ARK 3320 "Methods of Field Archaeology III" will cover two semesters. The theoretical part of the course will be comprised of lectures and workshops aimed at the academic and practical execution of the field work. The teaching emphasises understanding of landscape and material cultures in other countries as well as Norway. In addition to training in field manangement and archaeological survey, the course covers practical training in the use of museum archives and stockrooms in managerial and research matters, and execution of actual museum exhibits.



Learning outcome

After the course is completed, the student is expected to be able to independently lead an archaeological experiment. The student should be able to function as the day-to-day leader in the field, and be responsible for any required administrative or paperwork that goes beyond field work, including writing reports.

Learning methods and activities

Participation requires acceptance into the master programme in Archaeology. In order to be able to sit the exam, the student is required to attend a minimum of 75 percent of the theoretical lectures and a minimum of 75 percent of the field assignments. The students are to participate on a archaeological survey course in Central Norway (fall semester) and a field trip abroad (spring semester). A field management course lasting two weeks will be arranged in the spring (most likely in May). Activities linked to field work/archaeological survey course are obligatory.

Assessment form: An excavation report or registration report from the field management course must be submitted as an "approved report". Written 6 hours exam.
In the event the student fails one of the assessment elements, the element wil have to be repeated before a final grade for the course can be assigned.

Compulsory assignments

  • The students are required to attend a minimum of 75 % of the theoretical lectures and 75% of the field assignments

The course has restricted admission.

Course materials

The required reading list will be available at the beginning of the semester. Students are not allowed to consult any text-books during the 6 hour exam. Students must cover some of the expences related to their own field work and excursions.
