About

About the course

Course content

The course covers the development of a project description, and on the basis of this, the writing of a Master's thesis. The topic for the thesis is chosen in collaboration with the Museum of Natural History and Archaeology. The thesis should be the equivalent of one-and-a-half semester’s workload. It should be 45-60 pages long, A4 format, with 2.5cm margins, 1.5 line spacing and 12 point Times New Roman font (approximately 16,000-20,000 words). The table of contents, illustrations, acknowledgements, literature list and a possible appendix are in addition to this page count. If the length of the thesis significantly exceeds the norm, it will have to be approved by the advisor.

Learning outcome

The student should learn to conduct an archaeological analysis and develop and write an scientific thesis.

Learning methods and activities

Participation requires acceptance into the Master's programme in Applied Archaeology.
Assessment form: A grade evaluation of the Master's thesis in combination with an oral examination. The oral exam will consist of the student’s presentation of the thesis, followed by a discussion of the thesis between the censors and the student. A preliminary grade is set on the basis of the written work. The oral exam can be used to adjust the final grade.

In order to be able to sit the final exam, the student must participate in a minimum of 50 percent of all obligatory activities. Normally, the courses ARK3390 and ARK3391 will have combined lectures, and the obligatory activities will be distributed over four semesters, which also applies to students in Applied Archaeology. These students will, however, be exempted from the obligatory activity in the 10 week internship period (3rd semester).
