About

About the course

Course content

The course is given every year for the minimum of 3 participants. Wind resources and characteristics of the wind field, distribution of wind speed and turbulence, wind spectra and spatial coherence. Momentum theory and Betz limit for wind machines. Practical wind turbines, structural mechanics and vibrations of blade, tower and foundations. Offshore wind turbines. Control of wind generators. Briefly on environmental considerations and aesthetics.

Learning outcome

The purpose of the course is to give the student an introduction related to design, analysis, construction and maintenence of modern wind turbines.

Learning methods and activities

The course consists of a lectured part and a project part. The project will result in a report that accounts for 40% of the final grade. There may be questions related to the report during the exam.

Required previous knowledge

Basic knowledge of fluid mechanics, strength of materials, vibrations and statistics.

Course materials

Selected sections from Manwell, J.F., McGowan, J.G., Rogers, A.L.: Wind energy explained, John Wiley & sons,Chicester, England, 2002. Some special material as handouts.
