About
About the course
Course content
The course provides an introduction to the sampling gears used in collecting marine organisms in the water masses and in/on the bottom sediments. The students will learn to use quantitative gears (grabs and corers), together with qualitative gears (trawl, detritus sledges, triangular dredge, etc.) for sampling bottom animals together with bottom living fishes. Students will also get familiar with how to treat collected material, on board a research vessel and in the laboratory, to bring information on the diversity. The software PRIMER will be used in this context. Plankton will be sampled with different kinds of nets and together with macro-algae also studied in the laboratory. One day at sea using ROV (remote operated vehicle) is also included in the course. The course includes lectures, laboratory work and excursions. Students will write a project journal and will be evaluated during the work on board the ship and in the laboratory. They will also present the obtained results in plenary session. On completion of the course the students should be familiar with basic work on board a research vessel, laboratory treatment of samples and methods necessary to prepare the results for presentation.
