About the course

Course content

The students will be taught how to plan and execute experiments, how to use sampling gears, how to treat and concerve sampled material, basic principles for acquisition of experimental data, cultivation techniques for phytoplankton studies, techniques used in population genetics, water- and biochemical analysis. The students will be taught to gather information from libraries, to use computer-based statistical programmes, and how to compose a thesis. The course is compulsory for students who intend to obtain a Master degree in Marine Biology. The course is intensive and run during parts of September and is difficult to combine with other courses. The students will have to present a course report at the end of the course, which has to be approved before the 4 hours written examination.

Learning outcome

On completion of the course the students should be familiar with how to plan and execute experiments in aquatic ecology.

Lectures: 25 hours
Practicals/laboratory course: 80 hours, mandatory
Approved scientific publication (mini thesis) in plankton, approved report in nekton. Intensive course, taught in September
