Course content

This course will describe stress concept development and teach stress theory (acute and chronic stress, habituation, homeostasis, allostasis). The course will include brain anatomy, neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology and adrenal gland anatomy/-physiology. Lectures and seminars will focus on understanding the comparative nature of physiological and behavioral responses to stressors (these will include: adaptions, tolerance, learning, memory and mastering)
The course will develop comparative stress theory by use of examples from, mammals (including human), birds and fish.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
The student shall understand the stress concept and be familiar with mechanisms behind physiological and behavioral responses to acute and chronic stress loads.
Skills:
On completion of the course the student should be able to predict possible physiological and behavioral outcomes from acute and chronic stress exposures, and should also be able to evaluate possible stress vectors within planned animal experiments.
