About the course

Course content

The course consists of the following two areas of study: 1. Drama and theatre today. This study area surveys the field of drama and theatre, in a broad sense, in the world today. A wide range of forms and phenomena are presented; institutional theatre and non-institutional theatre, amateur theatre, community plays, theatre in schools, theatre as part of leisure time activities etc.. 2. Theatre and performance analysis. Within this study area analytic concepts and theories are presented and used for describing and interpreting performances visited during the course.

Learning outcome

The course aims at providing basic knowledge about the field of drama and theatre, and about contemporary perspectives and working methods within the field. The course is the foundation for subsequent courses within the programme. During the course, students are provided with basic terminology, basic skills in acting and improvising, and basic skills in describing and evaluating forms of drama and theatre.

Learning methods and activities

Instruction consists of lectures, group instruction, and practice sessions.

More on the form of assessment: Within study area 1. Drama and theatre today, students have to give (and pass) a practical and/or an oral presentation, individually or as a group, in a form approved by the teacher responsible for the course. Within study area 2. Theatre and performance analysis, the final assessment consists of a three day take-home examination, assessed by a letter grade. The student must have passed the presentation for 1. Drama and theatre today, to take a potential re-examination.

Students are required to check on the results of assignments on the department's bulletin boards or at It's learning.

Students are required to keep updated on messages from the department or the academic instructor at It's learning and Innsida, as well as at course pages on the web or bulletin boards.

Required previous knowledge

Admission to the Bachelor's programme in Drama and Theatre.
