About

About the course

Course content

The following sections are covered in the course:

- Theatre from the Antiquity until our own time, with an emphasis on European/Western theatre and its forms and functions, including Norwegian theatre from the 1800s until the present day. The course covers the growth of the institution of the theatre as we know it through drama, the physical theater building, the art of acting, and the art of directing - but it also shows how non-literary and non-institutional forms are an important part of the heritage of the Western theatre.

- Theatre of the world community. A presentation of various theatre traditions from Africa and Asia is provided, focusing on traditional forms of the theatre, such as rituals as well as shadow- and dance theatre in the light of social contexts and as a part of the total culture scene. The practice of non-European theatre will be described and treated on the basis of these traditional forms.

Learning outcome

The course will provide an introduction to the history and scale of drama/theatre, and therefore constitute the basis for the work in succeeding Bachelor's courses. During the course students will be given an overview of Western and non-Western forms of drama/theatre and understand their origins and function. They will acquire basic academic terminology and learn to describe and assess contemporary movements of drama/theatre.
