Course - Distributed Database Systems - DT8103
Distributed Database Systems
About
About the course
Course content
The topic is given biannually, next time autumn 2010. Vital challenges to be covered include: How is a database to be divided into smaller parts? How is access against the resulting decentralized parts to be optimized? How is parallelism among and errors within the corresponding distributed transactions to be carried out? How is the existence of heterogeneity and the need for interoperability in multidatabases to be attacked?
Learning outcome
Introduction to problems, principles, mechanisms and techniques connected to the handling of distributed, partially selfgoverned database systems.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and exercises - including one large manatory exercise. Written exam (80% weight) + 2 small manatory exercises, of which one will count in the final grade (20% weight). The topic will be lectured every second year - given a sufficient number of candidates.
Compulsory assignments
- Exercises
- Term project
Recommended previous knowledge
The topics TDT4145 Data Modelling, Databases and Database Management Systems plus TDT4190 Distributed Systems, or equivalent knowledge.
Course materials
To be given at start of the semester.
