Course content
The course is offered every second year, next time in the spring semester 2017. See the webpage
http://www.idi.ntnu.no/emner/tdt4260/comparch_ii_reading
from the spring term 2009. Topics covered are multicore architectures, benchmarks and their use in computer architecture research, manycores, heterogeneous multicores and accellerators, architecture evaluation, design space exploration, simulation of computer systems, research prototypes, energy efficient memory hierarchies and HW/SW interplay.
The students can to some extent influence on the choice of topics covered in the course.
Learning outcome
The main objective of the course is to train PhD students in advanced methods in computer architecture.
A. Knowledge: The candidate's knowledge about state of the art computer architectures and prototypes and main research methods in the field will be strengthened by the academic content listed above.
B. Skills: The candidate will be able to apply such research methods in both constructive and analytic work within computer architecture research. The mini-project is of special importance here. A critical attitude to simulation results is one example.
C. Competence: The candidate will get new knowledge and learn to build new knowledge within the field, and thus be trained to contribute in larger research or development projects within computer architecture.
Learning methods and activities
Mainly self-study, but possibly colloquia if enough students enroll in the course. Oral exam counts 67% and exercise/miniproject 33%.
Required previous knowledge
Course TDT4260 computer architecture or a corresponding course.
Course materials
Collection of papers decided at the start of the semester in cooperation with the students.
