Course content
The course gives an introduction to the main problem areas in formulating written English for students whose first language is Norwegian. Language proficiency is practiced through translation from Norwegian to English, and various types of written exercises. The course focuses on central contrasts between Norwegian and English; for example, in relation to grammatical and pragmatic differences and equivalences. Written English conventions associated with a variety of applications are described, and an introduction is given to various text genres.
Learning outcome
Through this course, students should acquire a broad overview of various English language conventions, as well as knowledge and practical skills relevant to the correct use of the English language. Students should also gain knowledge and practical skills associated with structuring texts and different text genres.
Learning methods and activities
Teaching is divided between lectures and group sessions, and students are also offered supervision. The lectures cover central contrasts between the Norwegian and English, linguistic conventions in English, various text genres, approaches to writing/process-oriented writing, etc. In the group sessions, the use of English is emphasised through practical exercises such as translation from Norwegian to English, free writing, and writing a variety of text types. Students are also expected to use Its:learning regularly.
Compulsory assignments
- Written assignment of approx. 500-800 words / 1-2 pages
- Written assignment of approx. 1400 words
- Oral test (30 min)
Recommended previous knowledge
Students should have knowledge of English equivalent to that of students who have learned English at Norwegian "videregående skole".
