Course content
This course is a genre-based introduction to poetry and drama in English. Presenting some of the best-known Enlish-language authors and works, the course explores a selection of poems and plays so as to illuminate the different forms and techniques found within these principal generic categories. The course also provides an introduction to specialist terminology used within literary criticism.
Learning outcome
Students should develop knowledge and understanding of English-language poetry and drama, they should know key terms within literary-critical terminology, and they should be able to practice methods of reading. Students should also develop English-language skills through extensive reading.

Compulsory assignments
- One written assignment, approx. 1000 words/2,5 pages
Recommended previous knowledge
Students should have knowledge of English equivalent to that of students who have learned English at Norwegian "videregående skole".

Course materials
The specific pensum will vary, but will include: a selection of poetic and dramatic texts from a range of different periods and English-language cultures; material offering guidance on the study of literature; a dictionary of literary terms. The reading list will be available at the beginning of the semester.
