Course content
This course is a genre-based introduction to prose fiction in English. Presenting some of the best-known English-language authors and works, the course explores a range of novels and short stories so as to illuminate the different forms and techniques found within these principal generic categories. The course also provides an introduction to writing and reading literary criticism, highlighting different approaches to the study of texts - such as for example formalism, historicism, feminism and psychoanalytic criticism.
Learning outcome
To develop knowledge and understanding of Enlish-language literary works, of the specialist language of literary criticism, and of different approaches and traditions within literary criticism; to develop English-language skills through extensive reading and through writing about literature.

- One written assignment, approx. 1000 words/2,5 pages
Recommended previous knowledge
Students should have knowledge of English equivalent to that of students who have learned English at Norwegian "videregående skole". ENG1201 Proficiency and ENG1302 Literature: Drama and Poetry.

Course materials
The specific pensum will vary, but will include: a selection of texts from a range of different periods and English-language cultures representing the main genres of prose literature in English; a selection of critical essays; material offering guidance on the study of literature; a dictionary of literary terms. The reading list will be available at the beginning of the semester.
