About the course

Course content

EXFAC0003 Language and Literature is a course for all students in the bachelor's programme in Language and Literature.

Students will be provided with a elementary introduction to basic subjects of theory and method in both linguistic and literary studies.

The main issue will be an introduction to important analytical terms and categories students of literature and linguistics should be aware of and know how to use. These will also be taught through practical analysis. Instruction in the form of lectures will be complemented by group instruction and exercises. The course includes one written assignment that must be approved prior to the exam. The student may choose to focus the individual assignment on linguistic or literary studies.

The instruction aims partly to provide an introduction to and a survey of the disciplines in the bachelor's program, and partly to focus on simple issues of method and theory.

Learning outcome

The course aim is to provide the students with a primary introduction to basic subjects of theory and method within linguistic and literary studies.

Lectures and group instruction with written assignments.

Tutoring and feedback.

Course requirements: One compulsory written assignment of 3 - 5 pages. The student may choose to focus the assignment on linguistic or literary studies. An oral or written assessment of the work (pass/fail) will be provided. The introductory course in academic writing at the beginning of the semester requires 80 % attendance to class instruction.

Form of assessment: The written test consists of 2 parts (1 linguistic and 1 literary). Each part is weighted equally, and failing one part entails failing the whole course.
