Course content
The course presents basic principles in musicology and music technology: structuring music (melodious, harmonic and rhythmic), an elementary introduction to mathematics and physics with respect to the sources of musical sound (instruments) and music application, an introduction to basic musicology and aesthetic interpretation. This ex.fac-course thus establishes a common platform for students eager to study music technology and musicology based on a variety of experience and background.
Learning outcome
"Everything is numbers", Pythagoras reputedly said, and he viewed music as sounding mathematics. The course aims at providing an introduction to the (expanded) significance Pythagoras' quote has today by developing an understanding of music, musicology, music technology and different phenomena that can be linked to music and technology in present time.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures: 2 hours per week for 12 weeks (incl. 2 weeks HUM-start directed by the Faculty of Arts). Exercises. Seminar.
