Lessons are not given in the academic year 2010/2011
About
About the course
Course content
The course is taught every other year, the next time in Autumn 2011. The content will be adapted to the students needs.
Topics that can be included: fiber components (optical fiber sensors, fiber gratings, Faraday mirrors, polarisation, quantum cryptography), medical measurement techniques (confocal microscopy, ultrasound, optical tweezers, spectroscopy, pulse oximetry, optical detection of ultrasound), diffusion theory in biomedical materials, scattering (Rayleigh, Mie), photonic crystals, classical optics and electromagnetics (reciprocity, causality, group velocity, Kramers-Kronig), metamaterials, electromagnetics (in relativistic form, in moving materials, Sagnac effect), and polarisation (Stokes vectors, Mueller matrices).
Learning outcome
To give an in-depth understanding of selected topics in the field of photonics.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, self-study, exercises and colloquim. The form of instruction depends on the number of students.
Recommended previous knowledge
TFE4160 Electrooptics and lasers and TFE4165 Applied Photonics, or equivalent.
Course materials
Notes and selected articles.
Material from eg. Born & Wolf, 'Principles of Optics', Saleh & Teich, 'Fundamentals of Photonics', Landau & Lifshitz, 'Electrodynamics of continuous media', Landau & Lifshitz, 'The classical theory of fields', and Jackson, 'Classical Electrodynamics'.
