About

About the course

Course content

A study of philosophical texts from different philosophical traditions, eras, and schools in a comparative perspective.

Learning outcome

FI3202 should give students an understanding of the perspectives, methods and theories that define the area of study for philosophy and philosophical activities. Further, it provides insight into philosophical issues, methods and expositions that can prepare students for an independent scholarly study in their master thesis.

Learning methods and activities

Seminars, self-study and oral presentation. Theory and Method is taken over the first two semesters (with normal progression), with assessment in the second. The course involves participation in the department's masters seminar in both semesters: 80% participation is required (all seminars included). The masters seminar constitutes both the teaching for Theory and Method, and more generally a forum for all the department's masters students to present and receive feedback on work in progress. The teaching for Theory and Method consists of a study of a broad range of philosophical traditions, perspectives and methods through different texts. In addition there will be focus on how one writes an academic text in philosophy. In both semesters one must present one of the curriculum texts, or a part thereof. In the second semester one must also present a draft of a project description for one's masters thesis. The final evaluation is through a (final) project description of 10-15 pages in length (which counts for 50% of the grade), and a 6 hour written exam based on the texts read during the previous year (counts 50%, curriculum can be used during the exam). Failing one part entails failing overall, when retaking both parts must be taken again.

To take the exam, all requirements on participation and oral presentations must be fulfilled.

Practical information regarding the project description: Date for submission is given under the examination dates. Three hard copies before 2 p.m. to the Department Office. Length: 20-30 pages using 12-point Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing. Front page: Course code, date, student id.
