Course content
FRA1300 is a basic introductory course in French with focus on intensive practice of oral and written language skills. The course also gives an introduction to French literature and culture, and builds a basis for further studies of French.
Learning outcome
Students should acquire skills in using grammars and dictionaries, and should be able to demonstrate their comprehension of various French texts through French-Norwegian translations. Their written performance should enable them to produce short texts in French. They should be familiar with the spelling-pronunciation interface, and be able to express themselves orally. One important objective of the teaching is to improve the students' reading comprehension skills.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures with group sessions and discussions, and groups lead by teaching assistants. Listening comprehension skills training and production of short texts.
Assessment: Written exam, 6 hours. Oral exam (10 min.). The written exam counts for 2/3 of the grade, while the oral exam counts for 1/3. The student must pass in both exams to get a final grade. The students must also pass all three parts on the written exam. The written and the oral exam are graded together.
Compulsory assignments
- 1 assignment in civilization, written in French, 1-2 pages
- 1 assignment in literature, written in French 1-2 pages
Recommended previous knowledge
Knowledge of French equivalent to that of students who have learned French at Norwegian Upper Secondary School.

Course materials
Language: Fløttum/Halvorsen/Lorentzen: Fransk språklære with exercises.
Literature: Two works of fiction and 5 pages poetry.
Civilization: Rsch/Rolle-Harold: La France au quotidien (2008)
