Course content
Grammar, phonetics, written and oral communication.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
Students who have passed this course will
- have knowledge of elementary phonemic and phonetic transcription.
- have knowledge of elementary clause structure and morphology.
- have knowledge of nominal and verbal syntax.
Skills:
Students who have passed this course.
- can express themselves in written and oral French with intelligible pronunciation.
- can use reference books (dictionaries, electronic dictionaries, Bescherelle) efficiently.
- can inflect, decline and systematically describe French nouns, adjectives, verbs and pronouns.
- can give elementary descriptions of the French phonological system.
- can use this knowledge in oral French.
General competence:
Students who have passed this course
- can understand how they themselves and others acquire foreign languages.
- can reflect on the link between language and identity.
- can adjust their behaviour and communication to different cultures.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, seminars and language laboratory. All lectures and seminars are compulsory.
Distribution of teaching hours
Grammar:
3 full hours x 14 weeks of lectures
2 full hours x 14 weeks of seminars
Phonetics:
3 full hours x 6 weeks of lectures
2 full hours x 6 weeks of seminars
Applied French:
3 full hours x 14 weeks of seminars
Compulsory assignments
- Written assignment in phonetics and phonology
- Written assignment in grammar
Further on evaluation
Assessment: Written exam (4 hours) and oral examination (approx. 20 min.) The exam is weighted at 2/3 and 1/3 respectively. Both parts of the exam are graded together. Students who fail must sit both parts again.
The exam must be answered in French.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Fransk med didaktikk - Caen (ÅFRANCAEN)
Recommended previous knowledge
We recommend proficiency in French equivalent to French level II from Upper Secondary School/Norwegian "videregående skole".
Required previous knowledge
Requires admission to the one-year-programme in French with didactics - Caen.
