About

About the course

Course content

In mineralogy, emphasis will be on mineral groups that are important for the student's reaserch area. Mineral structure, physical properties, chemical variation, stability and microstructures and deformation mechanisms are relevant topics. Relevant themes in petrology comprise processes such as weathering, diagenesis, hydrothermal alteration, magmatism and metamorphism. Phase equilibria, partition of elements among coexisting phases, differentiation processes, anatexis, isotope geochemistry, mineralogical geothermometers and geobarometers may be emphasised. The syllabus will include a common part and an individual part depending of the interests.

Learning outcome

To enhance the candidate's knowledge of mineralogical and petrological processes and their role in understanding mineral and rock properties, distribution and applicability.

Learning methods and activities

Teaching will be as colloquia including presentations and discussion. Selected topics shall be presented in a written report that will be evaluated and graded.

Course materials

In addition to relevant textbooks, recent research articles from journals will make up most of the study material.
